Treatment overview

Bone preservation after extraction

After a tooth is extracted, especially when a missing tooth may later be replaced, the alveolar ridge naturally loses volume. In some cases this reduction can be significant, particularly in the front area of the upper jaw where aesthetics are important.

Socket preservation uses bone grafts and, when needed, soft-tissue grafting to help maintain the dimensions of the ridge. The goal is bone preservation after extraction so future implant placement or prosthetic restoration has better bone support for implants and a more stable aesthetic foundation.

After

Case 1

Socket preservation

Socket preservation was performed in the area of the mandibular second premolar using xenograft. Because the buccal bone plate at the extraction site was very thin, leaving the socket ungrafted would have made future implant placement more difficult.

Socket preservation After Case 2
After

Case 2

Socket preservation

Socket preservation after the extraction of maxillary molars. Allograft and absorbable collagen fleece were used. Maintaining the dimensions in these areas reduces the need for bone grafting during implant placement.
