Treatment overview

Sinus-lift planning for implant support

After the extraction of posterior teeth in the upper jaw, the available bone may be insufficient for implant placement. This can happen because of natural ridge resorption, expansion of the maxillary sinus, and bone loss before implants.

Sinus membrane elevation places grafting material in the sinus area to help create the needed bone volume and bone support for implants. In some cases implants are placed in a second stage; in others they may be placed at the same appointment. The choice depends on sinus-lift planning, the initial bone volume, and the clinician's assessment.

Case 1

Lateral approach elevation

Elevation of the sinus membrane-open technique. In the first picture we can observe the bony window formation and the elevation of the membrane of the sinus. The second picture shows the filling of the sinus with a bone xenograft (a collagen membrane was also placed). The placement of the implants took place 9 months after the first surgery.

Case 2

Sinus membrane elevation

Sinus membrane elevation (lateral approach) with simultaneous placement of an osseointegrated implant. The elevation of the sinus membrane, the preparation of the osteotomy, and the placement of the implant with bone xenograft and collagen membrane can be observed. The implant was functionally loaded 9 months later.
