Teeth whitening planning

Before teeth whitening, the teeth and gums are assessed and cleaned so tartar, surface stains, and any active gum inflammation can be addressed. This helps determine whether stained teeth or tooth discoloration are suitable for whitening and whether existing restorations may need to be replaced after whitening if their color no longer matches the surrounding teeth.

Whitening can be performed at home with custom-made trays and a whitening gel, following the clinician's instructions, or in the office with a whitening agent activated during the appointment. Teeth that have previously received root canal treatment may require a different internal whitening approach by a specialized dentist when the goal is a whiter smile.
